"The Universal and International Exhibition," the highlight of the Centennial celebrations, was a last dramatic and symbolic gesture of national unity for PM Lester Pearson. An enormous success (over 50 million paid admissions), Expo also presented a forum for French President Charles de Gaulle to endorse Québec separatism, a cause that this celebration of Canadian unity was designed to discourage.
